Weight Management and Body Image
Achieving and maintaining a healthy weight
Being overweight is not harmless – excess fat is the major factor responsible for insulin resistance and resultant type 2 diabetes, and a risk factor for a plethora of conditions including heart disease, stroke, hypertension, high cholesterol, liver disease, gallbladder disease, respiratory problems, arthritis, and infertility. Recent findings in the field of obesity research continually give more reasons to keep one’s weight in check; excess weight may restrict blood flow to certain areas of the brain, impairing brain function and possibly fuelling more overeating. Even just a few extra pounds may increase risk of death from heart disease.
For many people, losing weight can feel like an overwhelming challenge. The stumbling blocks to losing weight and keeping it off are likely to be very personal but may include things like mood, stress/anxiety or habitual eating. Once these patterns are identified you can then work together to problem solve and develop alternative, preferred behaviours. Additionally, working with a therapist can help you to identify unhelpful thinking patterns that may be compromising your weight loss journey. Finally, in addition to helping with weight loss, working with a therapist can help you to work on issues of self-concept and self-esteem, which can often be compromised by trying to fit with society’s perception of appearance and the ‘body beautiful.’
Hypnotherapy for Weight Loss (Angela Terris/Aniko Hevizi)
Hypnotherapy helps with weight loss by reprogramming the subconscious part of your mind to create permanent changes naturally and automatically. The subconscious is where all the automatic everyday actions we engage in are held and with positive suggestions and visualisations old, worn out patterns of eating can be released for new healthier ones. With hypnotherapy you will find different ways to; reward yourself instead of with food, naturally eat more healthily, increase physical activity and eat only when you are hungry. By targeting the subconscious mind with powerful suggestions, a hypnotherapist will help you develop a new, positive relationship with food, exercise and yourself. The aim is to make you feel confident about your body, change any negative thoughts about eating and help you lose weight healthily and responsibly without having an impact on your emotional well-being. Hypnotherapy is a pleasant, relaxed experience which is just like the state you feel just before falling asleep or are fully awake. You are always in control and the therapist cannot make you do anything you do not want to. If there are psychological or medical reasons for over eating hypnotherapy may not be suitable, please check with the hypnotherapist who will be happy to advise you.
Counselling for Weight Loss (Angela Terris)
A personalised weight loss programme to help you break away from old eating habits and create a new, more healthy approach to food. Research has shown that the majority of diets fail long term, and not only do dieters usually put on the weight they have lost, but often they put on extra weight too. The reason this could be is that dieting only addresses the physical side of the problem, but there are many reasons we over eat and sometimes they can be for emotional reasons where food is being used as a substitute for something else. Being on a diet can also make you obsess over food, so you find yourself thinking more about food most of the time. The weight loss programme de-obsesses you from these unhelpful ways of thinking. The process of losing weight is different for everyone and a personalised programme will explore your relationship with food and what weight means to you. Find out and identify your eating triggers, gain control of food and your life, loose weight naturally and stop sabotaging your own success.
