A Good Night's Sleep...

One in three people in the UK suffer from a lack of sleep quality. Sleep difficulties are described as problems people have with getting to sleep, staying a sleep, getting enough sleep and disturbances during sleep. A good nights sleep is very important to us as it can cause significant impact on our health and moods if we do not get enough.

These effects include:
  • More prone to accidents due to drowsiness slowing down our reaction times.
  • Slows down our thinking and learning abilities as it impairs attention, concentration and problem solving.
  • Effects our memories and we become more forgetful.
  • Health problems such as heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and weight gain.
  • Lowers sex drive.
  • Increased risk of depression and anxiety.
  • Ages skin.

Sleep is a natural state where it is essential for our well-being and has restorative powers over our mind and body. When in shut down mode it allows for rest, healing, dreaming and the reorganisation of our thoughts and memories. The benefits of sleeping well are many, allowing for the optimum function of body and mind, a better capacity to cope with the stresses of life and the ability to make sound judgements for ourselves.

Hypnotherapy for Sleep (Angela Terris)

Hypnotherapy can help retrain your mind and body to naturally fall asleep. It is often only when lack of sleep starts to affect other aspects of our lives that we realise we have a problem. This is where the mind and body have lost the ability to fall asleep naturally and needs to be 'retrained'. Hypnotherapy can do this by re-educating you to expect a good nights sleep and address your belief, anxieties and worries that you can't. Hypnotherapy helps you relax, both mind and body, using various relaxation techniques that with practice will reprogramme your mind. These are techniques you can learn for your own benefit and use when at home. Hypnotherapy is a pleasant, relaxed experience which is just like the state you feel just before falling asleep or are fully awake. You are always in control and the therapist can not make you do anything you do not want to.

Foot Massage and Sleep ~ massage of the reflexes of the feet which correspond to the body

Depending on the causes of poor sleep, reflexology is a great way to ease way tension, increase relaxation and improve well-being by increasing endorphins and serotonin (working the pituitary and hypothalamus) and reducing the release of adrenaline and cortisol (working the adrenals). Emotional support can play a role too, by encouraging clients to look at and start to come to terms with and deal with emotional and mental issues which might be playing a role in poor sleep patterns. Guided imagery and visualisation techniques can help to support this process, as can addressing lifestyle and stress responses. Reflexology works holistically, so all areas are worked each time. This promotes “homeostasis” and encourages the body to do what it does naturally – that is, to heal itself.
