Low-Level Laser Therapy/Photobiomodulation Therapy

Picture
Rob, our osteopath, is trained to offer Photobiomodulation (PBM) or Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) as an adjunct to osteopathic treatment.

This is a laser or LED light therapy that improves tissue repair (skin wounds, muscle, tendon, bone, nerves), reduces inflammation and reduces pain wherever the beam is applied. Usually applied by a therapist or technician, treatments typically take 1 - 20 minutes and should be applied one or more times a while symptoms persist.

How it works
PBM works predominately on a protein in our cells to increase the production of repair chemicals and reduce cellular stress, leading to improved tissue repair, reduced inflammation, and less pain

There are actually two kinds of PBM
  • High power density which is necessary for pain relief and deep tissue targets.
  • Low power density to promote healing and reduce inflammation in superficial wounds, tendons and joints

Treatment usually consists of a combination of the two

Which conditions can it help?
There is substantial clinical evidence published in peer reviewed medical journals that PBM Therapy can stimulate repair of tissue, reduce inflammation and relieve pain in musculoskeletal disorders.

The three main areas with good evidence are:
  • Soft Tissue Injuries
  • Joint conditions
  • Back and Neck Pain

Other applications such as shingles, post-operative pain, also respond well.

Your medical history
Before we start to treat you, we will make a full medical assessment. We take time to listen to you and ask questions to make sure we understand your medical history and your day-to-day routine. We’ll ask you about things like diet, exercise and what is happening in your life, as these may give clues to help our diagnosis.
If you are a current osteopathic or chiropractic patient, you may be offered this therapy as part of your care
