Chiropractic

The aims of Chiropractic care are reducing pain and optimising the function of the body.

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) recommend chiropractic treatment for low back pain. Several large studies have shown chiropractic is an effective choice for a range of conditions and also that it cost-effective and very safe.

The perception of Chiropractic is often limited to the treatment of back pain, but as Primary Healthcare Providers we are consulted about a whole range of conditions.

“Chiropractors also place an emphasis on nutrition and exercise, wellness and healthy lifestyle modifications which when correctly applied will improve the health of individuals. How far you take your chiropractic care is up to you - from pain relief to optimal function - the choice is always yours.

Specifically, Chiropractic may help:
  • Ankle sprain (short term management)
  • Cramp
  • Elbow pain and tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis) arising from associated musculoskeletal conditions of the back and neck, but not isolated occurrences
  • Headache arising from the neck (cervicogenic)
  • Joint pains including hip and knee pain from osteoarthritis as an adjunct to core OA treatments and exercise
  • General, acute & chronic backache, back pain (not arising from injury or accident)
  • Generalised aches and pains
  • Lumbago
  • Mechanical neck pain (as opposed to neck pain following injury i.e. whiplash)
  • Migraine prevention
  • Minor sports injuries and tensions
  • Muscle spasms
  • Plantar fasciitis (short term management)
  • Rotator cuff injuries, disease or disorders
  • Sciatica
  • Shoulder complaints (dysfunction, disorders and pain)
  • Soft tissue disorders of the shoulder

Your First Visit . . .

The chiropractor will carry out a detailed case history, asking you lots of questions both about your current problem and your medical history. Some questions may seem unrelated to your condition, but this information can be important to assess your suitability for chiropractic care. If you have a problem that requires medical attention, your chiropractor will promptly refer you to the appropriate person.

You may then be asked to put on a gown (keeping your underwear on) and the chiropractor will carry out a physical examination. This may include an assessment of your posture and your range and ability to move. Usually, orthopaedic and neurological tests will be carried out. Individual joints may be assessed and the strength of various muscles checked as an insight into the functioning of your body. The chiropractor may find asymmetries and areas of dysfunction in your spine or other joints. X-rays or MRIs may be ordered if clinically necessary.  Many of the tests are to rule out other conditions and make sure there are no serious challenges to your health.

After the examination, a working diagnosis will be made. Your chiropractor will explain the findings, your condition and an estimate of the type and extent of treatment need to help you and what you should expect to feel. If appropriate, treatment will then commence.

You will probably receive advice about your lifestyle, work and exercise, either at the first visit or a little later on in your care plan. We will help you manage your condition and help to prevent a recurrence of the problem with lifestyle changes when appropriate.

What does the Chiropractic Adjustment Visit consist of ?

Your visit may consists of a wide range of soft tissue and joint manipulative techniques appropriate to you and your condition, known by Chiropractors as "adjustments". Adjustments aim to improve the function of the joints, aiming to relieve pain and muscle spasm and restore normal function.

The treatment can be different for every single person, and will be tailored to you and your needs. Great thought will be given to the exact technique to use in each case.  The chiropractor will explain exactly what is going to happen and what you are likely to feel before each adjustment or technique and you are free to ask any question at any time.

The chiropractic adjustments may be reinforced with other strategies such as applying strapping or tape, using supports or foot orthotics, using acupuncture needles for pain relief or using ice packs or massage.

If the chiropractor thinks lifestyle or habits are contributing to your problem, helpful, practical and friendly advice will be offered.  For example, certain nutrients may help your body to heal – so appropriate dietary changes or supplements may be discussed.  Exercise programmes or stretches may be required or work-station changes recommended.  With your permission your GP may be involved in your care, or even your employer if the workplace is part of the problem.
