What is BodyTalk?

BodyTalk is a system of healthcare that specifically addresses imbalances in the body and mind (bodymind), and Gerry offers this therapy at Equilibrium.

The BodyTalk Healthcare system uniquely embraces concepts and skills ranging from the ancient wisdom of Chinese medicine and Vedic philosophy, chiropractic, to the latest cutting edge discoveries in Quantum physics, epigenetics and neuroscience. It was devised by acupuncturist and chiropractor John Veltheim, in the '90's, and he continues to develop and grow the parameters of the application of BodyTalk as it encompasses new discoveries in knowledge and awareness. The system is used in individual therapy as a stand-alone, or as a part of other therapies. It is also used by professional sport people to improve performance, and by companies and organisations to address productivity and communication issues.

BodyTalk works from a foundation of 4 fundamental principles:

1) the bodymind is self-healing and has a drive and direction towards health. (This concept is also accepted in Osteopathy, Chiropractic and Acupuncture . )

2) the body and mind are inseparable: "two sides of the same coin".

3) the bodymind has an innate intelligence or wisdom that is quite separated from ego consciousness and that can be accessed and communicated with. BodyTalkers refer to this as "Innate Wisdom".

4) in BodyTalk it is accepted that for health to prevail, it is essential to have clear and untarnished communication between bodymind systems right down to the cellular level. STRESS frequently disrupts these channels of communication, resulting in either distortions in the signals or no signals at all. This leads to compromised health and ultimately disease.

Within the bodymind there are many different systems for communication, ranging from the core physical systems like endocrine, immune, neuropeptides, and neurological , to the more energetic systems such as the meridians, the Wei Chi, and the chakras.

These systems are all accessible by BodyTalk.

A great deal of the work done in a BodyTalk session is directed toward repairing and strengthening the various damaged circuits, thus bringing the body/mind back into equilibrium. Stress is one of the major factors that cause communication breakdown, especially ongoing, relentless stress.

Stress Affects our Health.
Stress has a profound effect on the body and it is becoming a serious problem in our modern society. It compromises the bodymind's ability to heal and function at an optimal level. When an individual experiences ongoing stress, it can overload the energetic circuits of the body, causing them to fail or be severely compromised. This is just like plugging too many appliances into an outlet and tripping a circuit breaker in your home. You have blown a fuse and must reset it. Often the bodymind cannot reset these blown circuits on its own, so it then must continue to function in a less than ideal state. This ultimately leads to degeneration, illness and pain in the body, a sign that it is simply falling behind in the healing process. Stress-related illnesses include, but are not limited to: high blood pressure, digestive disorders, hormone and endocrine imbalances, fatigue, infertility issues and all manner of immune system disorders.

HOW DOES BODYTALK WORK?

In any physical dysfunction eg abdominal bloating and discomfort, or painful shoulder or sprained ankle, or weak lungs, there is always a varying degree of involvement from the environment, as well as at the emotional, mental and spiritual levels. Likewise, for a state of depression or anxiety there will be aspects of involvement from the other levels.

If the problem is addressed only at one of these levels, then it can take a long time for the problem to clear up; however if all the levels involved can be addressed, then the dysfunction or disharmony can often be resolved quickly.

With BodyTalk we are not only able to re-establish communication within the body, but are also able to remove obstacles to the communication that may be, for example, in the form of emotions stored in the tissues. Much of the work consists in bringing clarity to a dysfunctional situation, and by doing this, by bringing it into the patient's consciousness, we offer an awareness of why the person is troubled. Often, that understanding/ clarity alone (aka the "Aha" moment!)is enough to enable the body to go through a shift away from involvement in that issue, so that the person can then live in a more functional way. BodyTalk helps to lift the fog. Layer by layer.

This is where the beauty and effectiveness of BodyTalk lies.

WHAT HAPPENS IN A SESSION?

As with an osteopathic treatment, a comprehensive history is taken. This may involve the patient completing a Health Form, in order to give the practitioner not just details of the presenting problem, but a broader view of the person's current circumstances. An assessment may be done of joint active ranges of motion and of the muscle weakness pattern in order to get a pre-session baseline. Noting these patterns before and after a BodyTalk session can be really useful for seeing the changes that can occur.

The session itself is normally carried out with the person lying comfortably on their back on the plinth, clothed, with the practitioner seated at the side. Sometimes the client can be seated in a chair. The sessions are relaxed and relaxing. They can last up to three quarters of an hour, sometimes more.

The practitioner uses a simple and passive form of biofeedback using the patient's arm, to tune in to and dialogue with the client’s inner smart person - this is what we call the person’s 'innate wisdom' (aka "Innate"); it is also known by other names, for instance the 'inner physician' .

A series of "items" of relevance and links between them are built up into what is called a "formula”. When it is time to implement the formula, the practitioner gently "taps it out" by tapping lightly on the head and sternum of the patient. It is very simple.
